Background:

To understand the experiences of young widowed parents.

Qualitative study employing constructivist grounded theory.
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven fathers and five mothers who were widowed while raising dependent children.

Three key themes emerged: Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, and Contextual influences.
Dependent children created sole responsibility and increased demands, but also offered a sense of purpose.
Participants emphasized the need for greater systemic and cultural awareness of young widowhood.

Conclusions:

Adjustment to partner death for parents with dependent children is complex, influenced by internal, external, and situational factors.
Increased awareness and improved communication surrounding young widowhood are crucial.
Social, financial, and therapeutic interventions are recommended to support this population.
