Drug Control Governance: Regulatory Bodies and Their Impact01:03

Drug Control Governance: Regulatory Bodies and Their Impact

268
Drug control governance involves the oversight and regulation of pharmaceuticals to ensure their safety and efficacy while preventing illegal drug use and trafficking. Regulatory bodies, including the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Union's European Medicines Agency (EMA), play a central role in this process. These agencies evaluate the safety and efficacy of drugs before they can be marketed. They fund clinical trials and assess the benefits and risks associated with...

Drug Regulation01:25

Drug Regulation

1.9K
Drug regulation encompasses the management of drug usage by evaluating its safety and efficacy through assessments conducted by regulatory authorities. Regrettably, the history of drug regulation is marred by several catastrophic events. One such incident is the Elixir Sulfanilamide tragedy, in which the toxic compound diethyl glycol was included in a sweet-tasting medication, leading to numerous fatalities. This event prompted the enactment of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act in 1938. Under...

Targets for Drug Action: Overview

7.7K
Drugs target macromolecules to modify ongoing cellular processes. Primary drug targets include receptors, ion channels, transporters, and enzymes.
Receptors are either membrane-spanning or intracellular proteins, which upon binding a ligand, get activated and transmit the signal downstream to elicit a response. Drugs bind receptors, either mimicking the action of endogenous ligands or blocking the receptor activity to bring about a modified response. Nearly 35% of approved drugs target the G...

Drug Therapy01:28

Drug Therapy

108
The advent of drug therapy has profoundly shaped modern mental health care, providing targeted treatments for a range of psychological disorders. Psychotherapeutic drugs, classified into antianxiety, antidepressant, and antipsychotic medications, address symptoms across anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and schizophrenia. While these medications have transformed patient outcomes, they require careful management due to their potential side effects and limitations.

Drug Clearance: Overview01:06

Drug Clearance: Overview

187
Drug elimination refers to drug removal from the body, either through urine or bile, by the kidneys or liver, respectively. A pharmacokinetic parameter, drug clearance, measures the efficiency of drug removal from the bloodstream within a specific time frame. It is calculated as the rate at which a drug is eliminated from plasma divided by the drug's concentration in plasma.
Drug clearance is not limited to renal excretion but encompasses all organs involved in drug elimination, including...

Drug Discovery: Overview

9.2K
Drug discovery is a multifaceted process involving extensive screening, testing, and optimization of lead compounds to identify potential new drugs for therapeutic use. It combines several approaches, including screening large numbers of natural products, chemical modification of known active molecules, identification of new drug targets, and rational design based on biological mechanisms and drug-receptor structure. These approaches are carried out in both academic research laboratories and...

Summary

Sweden's drug policy has failed to reduce drug use and caused harm. A new "experimenting society" approach is needed, embracing a biopsychosocial model and rigorous evaluation of drug policy reforms.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Sociology
  • Policy Studies

Background:

  • The current Swedish drug policy, predominantly biochemical, has been in place for four decades.
  • Despite its aims, drug access and demand have increased, and the policy has caused collateral damage.
  • The goal of a drug-free society remains elusive under the current model.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To critically analyze the theoretical underpinnings of the Swedish drug policy model.
  • To explore alternative theoretical frameworks for drug policy, including a biopsychosocial approach.
  • To introduce and exemplify the principles of an "experimenting society" for drug policy reform.

Main Methods:

  • Theoretical analysis of the Swedish drug policy model.
  • Examination of alternative theoretical understandings and their implications.

  • Case examples of applying "experimenting society" principles in Sweden.
  • Main Results:

    • The current biochemical approach and the notion of all non-medical drug use as abuse are counterproductive.
    • Recreational and problematic drug consumption are distinct phenomena and do not co-vary.
    • The Swedish "war on drugs" has not achieved its objectives and has led to negative consequences.

    Conclusions:

    • Sweden's current drug policy has failed and requires fundamental rethinking.
    • A shift towards a biopsychosocial model and acceptance of co-existence with narcotics is necessary.
    • Adopting an "experimenting society" approach with rigorous, multidimensional evaluations is crucial for effective drug policy.
