Genomics

37.8K
Genomics is the science of genomes: it is the study of all the genetic material of an organism. In humans, the genome consists of information carried in 23 pairs of chromosomes in the nucleus, as well as mitochondrial DNA. In genomics, both coding and non-coding DNA is sequenced and analyzed. Genomics allows a better understanding of all living things, their evolution, and their diversity. It has a myriad of uses: for example, to build phylogenetic trees, to improve productivity and...

Proteomics

8.3K
A proteome is the entire set of proteins that a cell type produces. We can study proteomes using the knowledge of genomes because genes code for mRNAs, and the mRNAs encode proteins. Although mRNA analysis is a step in the right direction, not all mRNAs are translated into proteins.
Proteomics is the study of proteomes' function. It involves the large-scale systematic study of the proteome to denote the protein complement expressed by a genome. Scientist Mark Wilkins coined the term...

Summary

The exposome concept, encompassing environmental exposures and lifestyle, needs clarification. We propose redefining the exposome to focus on external factors and introducing "functional exposomics" for exposure-phenotype studies.

Area of Science:

  • Environmental health
  • Systems biology
  • Multi-omics research

Background:

  • The exposome concept integrates non-genetic factors influencing health across the life course.
  • Current interpretations create disciplinary disconnects and separate environmental and biological research.
  • Inclusion of endogenous processes complicates the exposome's role in multi-omics systems biology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose a reoriented definition of the exposome.
  • To introduce the term "functional exposomics" for exposure-phenotype interaction studies.
  • To facilitate integration of exposome data within multi-omics and systems biology frameworks.

Main Methods:

  • Conceptual redefinition of the exposome.
  • Introduction of the term "functional exposomics".

Main Results:

  • A refined definition of the exposome exclusively encompassing external environmental contacts.
  • Establishment of "functional exposomics" as the study of exposure-phenotype interactions.
  • A clearer framework for integrating exposome data in multi-omics research.

Conclusions:

  • A revised exposome definition enhances its utility in systems biology.
  • "Functional exposomics" provides a framework for studying exposure-phenotype relationships.
  • This reorientation bridges environmental and biological research communities for holistic health studies.
