Summary
This study shows that a new robotic system is feasible for sacrocolpopexy surgery. Early results indicate a decrease in operative time and a low rate of recurrence, demonstrating successful adoption.
Area of Science:
- Urogynecology
- Minimally Invasive Surgery
- Robotic Surgery
Background:
- Sacrocolpopexy is a surgical procedure to treat pelvic organ prolapse.
- Robotic platforms offer potential advantages in minimally invasive gynecological surgery.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe the initial experience with sacrocolpopexy using a novel robotic surgical platform.
- To evaluate the feasibility and early outcomes of robotic-assisted sacrocolpopexy.
Main Methods:
- A case series of 25 patients undergoing robotic-assisted sacrocolpopexy using the TransEnterix Senhance platform.
- Data collected included perioperative information, complications, and recurrence rates.
- Operative times were compared between the first and second halves of the patient cohort.
Main Results:
- Mean operative time decreased significantly from the first to the second half of cases (231.7 min vs 190.3 min, p=0.047).
- No major intraoperative complications occurred.
- Two patients (8.0%) experienced anatomical recurrence without subjective symptoms; two patients (8.0%) were readmitted within 30 days for small bowel obstruction.
Conclusions:
- The novel robotic platform is feasible for performing sacrocolpopexy.
- Early adoption demonstrated successful implementation with a trend towards reduced operative times.
