Background:

  • Diabetes mellitus is a known risk factor for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
  • Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common ocular complication of diabetes.
  • Investigating a potential link between DR and POAG could aid in early POAG diagnosis.

Approach:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted across 11 databases.
  • Six studies involving 255,614 patients were included for qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Meta-analyses were performed to assess the association between DR and POAG using random-effects models.

Key Points:

  • The meta-analysis included two longitudinal and four cross-sectional studies.
  • No significant association was found between any DR and POAG (OR 1.17; 95% CI: 0.58-2.35).
  • Subgroup analyses also revealed no association in cross-sectional or longitudinal studies.

Conclusions:

  • The study did not find convincing evidence linking diabetic retinopathy to prevalent or incident primary open-angle glaucoma.
  • Further research may be needed to fully elucidate any potential relationship between these conditions.
