Phlebotomy-induced anemia in preterm mouse pups causes significant red blood cell and hemoglobin reductions. These hematological changes may worsen neonatal diseases, offering insights for infant anemia treatment strategies.
Area of Science:
- Neonatal Hematology
- Preclinical Disease Modeling
Background:
- Anemia is prevalent in preterm infants, stemming from blood draws and immature red blood cell production.
- The transition from fetal to neonatal life presents unique stressors for newborns.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the hematological consequences of phlebotomy-induced anemia (PIA) in a preclinical mouse model.
- To understand how anemia impacts neonatal adaptation and potentially exacerbates illness.
Main Methods:
- C57BL/6 mice underwent timed phlebotomy between postnatal days 2-10 to induce anemia.
- Complete blood counts were analyzed using a Sysmex XT-2000iV analyzer.
Main Results:
- Anemic pups exhibited decreased red blood cells (RBC) and hemoglobin (Hb), with increased reticulocyte (RET) and red cell distribution width (RDW).
- Elevated immature reticulocyte fraction (IRF) and high fluorescent RET were observed, alongside reduced mean corpuscular volume (MCV), MCH, and MCHC.
- Monocytes and neutrophils increased significantly, while lymphocytes remained unchanged.
Conclusions:
- Phlebotomy-induced anemia in mouse pups leads to significant hematological alterations.
- These changes may contribute to the severity of neonatal diseases and highlight the need for further research into therapeutic interventions.
