    Background:

    • Algodystrophy (also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) is often linked to microcirculatory disorders.
    • The Doppler method offers a potential non-invasive approach to assess arterial function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the utility of Doppler velocimetry in diagnosing early-stage algodystrophy.
    • To identify specific Doppler parameters indicative of circulatory abnormalities in algodystrophy.

    Main Methods:

    • Doppler velocimetry was used to record blood flow velocities in the limbs of 10 stage I algodystrophy patients.
    • Patients were compared to 10 healthy controls and 10 patients with conditions predisposing to algodystrophy.
    • Systolic, diastolic, and mean blood flow velocities were measured at various limb levels.

    Main Results:

    • Algodystrophy patients exhibited increased mean velocity with a diastolic component.
    • A diastolic velocity >3 cm/sec or a >5 cm/sec mean velocity difference between limbs indicated algodystrophy with 80% sensitivity.
    • Contralateral limb abnormalities were detected in 30% of algodystrophy patients.

    Conclusions:

    • The technique may reveal abnormalities in contralateral, non-affected limbs.
