[Glossodynia--indication for patch testing?].

G Bäurle, A Schönberger

    Zeitschrift Fur Hautkrankheiten
    |August 15, 1986
    PubMed
    Summary

Patch testing is not clinically relevant for diagnosing glossodynia (burning mouth syndrome). However, it can identify allergies in patients with stomatitis and dentures, often resolving symptoms after denture replacement.

    Area of Science:

    • Oral Medicine
    • Allergology
    • Dermatology

    Context:

    • Glossodynia (burning mouth syndrome) affects 100 patients without oral mucosal pathology.
    • Suspected allergic contact stomatitis impacts 16 patients.
    • Comparison group: dental professionals with hand eczema.

    Purpose:

    • To evaluate the clinical relevance of patch testing for glossodynia and allergic contact stomatitis.
    • To determine if dental material allergies cause oral symptoms.

    Summary:

    • Patch testing showed no clinical relevance for allergens in glossodynia patients.
    • Patch testing identified causal allergies in stomatitis patients with dentures.
    • Replacing denture bases resolved symptoms in allergic stomatitis cases but not in glossodynia.

    Impact:

    • Patch testing is deemed unnecessary for diagnosing glossodynia.
    • Patch testing is valuable for identifying allergies in denture-related stomatitis.
    • Findings guide diagnostic approaches for oral burning sensations and stomatitis.
