Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Imaging
  • Radiology
  • Dentistry

Background:

  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disk displacement is a common condition.
  • Understanding its impact on surrounding stomatognathic structures is crucial for effective treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of TMJ disk displacement on anatomical structures using biexponential T2 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) maps.
  • To correlate quantitative MRI findings with disk displacement status.

Main Methods:

  • Acquired MRI scans of 25 patients' TMJs with eight echo times.
  • Created biexponential T2 maps and segmented key anatomical structures.
  • Analyzed T2 relaxation times and fractions using statistical tests.

Main Results:

  • Significant differences in T2 values were found in retrodiscal tissue, medial pterygoid muscle, and bone marrow between groups with and without disk displacement.
  • A trend toward statistical significance was observed in the pulp's short T2 component.
  • Segmentation reliability was excellent (93.6%).

Conclusions:

  • Quantitative MRI features of stomatognathic structures are significantly altered by TMJ disk displacement.
  • These findings support the use of MRI in combined treatment approaches for TMJ disk displacement, pterygoid muscle issues, and occlusal reconstruction.
