Tooth Anatomy

1.2K
The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth.
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or...

Summary

The Toothguide 3D Master accurately represents natural tooth color in only 40% of the Spanish population studied. Many intermediate tooth shades fall outside the system, with clinically unacceptable color differences.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Aesthetics
  • Colorimetry
  • Materials Science

Background:

  • The Toothguide 3D Master is a widely used system for shade matching natural teeth.
  • Assessing its accuracy in representing diverse natural tooth colors is crucial for effective dental restorations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the validity and representational accuracy of the 26-tab Toothguide 3D Master system.
  • To determine how well the system represents the natural tooth color of the Spanish population.

Main Methods:

  • Measured natural tooth color in 1361 Spanish participants (ages 18-89) using the Easyshade Compact spectrophotometer.
  • Calculated color coordinates and frequency of 3D Master shades and intermediate shades.
  • Analyzed color differences (ΔEab*) using Euclidean formula and SAS 9.1.3 software.

Main Results:

  • 49 intermediate tooth shades were identified in 60% of participants, not covered by the physical tabs.
  • The range of intermediate shades extended from 0M1.5 to 5M2.5.
  • 82.4% of color differences among intermediate shades were clinically unacceptable (ΔEab* ≥ 5.5).

Conclusions:

  • Only 40% of the studied Spanish population's natural tooth colors are accurately represented by the Toothguide 3D Master's physical shade tabs.
  • The system inadequately covers the spectrum of natural tooth colors within this population.
  • Significant color differences suggest limitations in the system's clinical applicability for precise shade matching.
