Stress and Mental Health01:30

Stress and Mental Health

232
Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

265
Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

12.6K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Long-term Depression01:03

Long-term Depression

2.7K
Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Depressive Disorders: Etiology01:27

Depressive Disorders: Etiology

176
Depressive disorders result from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, each contributing uniquely to the development and persistence of the condition. Understanding these factors provides critical insight into the multifaceted nature of depression.
Biological Factors in Depression
Biological predispositions significantly influence the risk of developing depressive disorders. Genetic studies highlight the role of variations in the serotonin transporter...

Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.5K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Summary

This study found that involuntary temporary work uniquely predicts increased distress over time. Other forms of underemployment fluctuated with mental health but did not show long-term effects.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health Psychology
  • Mental Health Research
  • Sociology of Work

Background:

  • Previous research links underemployment to poorer mental health.
  • Gaps exist in understanding which specific underemployment components impact mental health longitudinally.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To longitudinally examine the unique impact of various subjective underemployment constructs on mental health.
  • To identify group differences in underemployment experiences.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal study of a large adult working sample over 9 months (4 waves).
  • Assessed multiple underemployment components: underpayment, status, involuntary temporary work, field, poverty-wage employment, involuntary part-time work, and overqualification.
  • Measured symptoms of distress.

Main Results:

  • Involuntary part-time work, involuntary temporary work, and poverty-wage employment fluctuated with distress.
  • Only involuntary temporary work significantly predicted increased distress over time.
  • Gender, age, education, and social class predicted different underemployment forms.

Conclusions:

  • Involuntary temporary work poses a unique risk to mental health over time.
  • Findings highlight the need to address mental health inequities, particularly for marginalized groups.
  • Involuntary temporary work should be a focus for interventions and policy.
