Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Immunology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • The COVID-19 pandemic presents challenges for cancer patient treatment due to increased risks.
  • Pembrolizumab is an immunotherapy used for advanced melanoma.

Observation:

  • A middle-aged patient with advanced melanoma developed immune-mediated pancreatitis after pembrolizumab treatment.
  • The patient contracted COVID-19, requiring hospitalization and interrupting cancer therapy.

Findings:

  • The patient recovered from severe COVID-19 pneumonia without vaccination.
  • Post-recovery, the patient received two Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines.
  • A follow-up CT scan revealed near-complete remission of melanoma.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of managing treatment interruptions and infections in cancer patients.
  • Successful recovery and subsequent remission suggest potential benefits of vaccination post-COVID-19 infection in advanced melanoma patients.
  • Further research is needed on the interplay between COVID-19, immunotherapy, and cancer outcomes.
