Infection and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are the leading causes of death in kidney transplant recipients. Early detection and treatment of these conditions are crucial for improving patient survival rates after transplantation.
Area of Science:
- Nephrology
- Immunology
- Transplantation Medicine
Background:
- Immunological therapies have improved kidney transplant recipient and graft survival, but further advancements are needed.
- Mortality remains a significant concern for kidney transplant recipients despite therapeutic progress.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the causes and patterns of mortality among kidney transplant recipients.
- To identify key factors influencing survival post-kidney transplantation.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of medical data from adult kidney transplant recipients who died between November 2010 and December 2020.
- Exclusion of pediatric recipients, en bloc/dual transplants, and those with missing data or primary non-functioning grafts.
- Grouping recipients by donor type (living vs. deceased) and analyzing mortality by time post-transplant and cause.
Main Results:
- Out of 314 recipients, 35 (11.14%) died; 29 were included in the analysis.
- Infection was the primary cause of mortality (58.6%), followed by cardiovascular disease (CVD) (24.1%).
- Sepsis (29.4%) and COVID-19 (23.5%) were significant contributors to infection-related deaths.
Conclusions:
- Infection and CVD are critical factors affecting kidney transplant recipient survival.
- Prompt diagnosis and management of infectious complications and CVD are essential for enhancing long-term outcomes in kidney transplant recipients.
