Background:

  • Varied-intensity interval training (VIIT) can elicit higher maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max) fractions than constant-intensity training.
  • Intermittent vibration is explored as a potential enhancer of training adaptations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if combining VIIT with intermittent vibration further increases cyclists' V̇O2max fraction.
  • To determine if vibration optimizes the adaptive stimulus during high-intensity interval training.

Main Methods:

  • Thirteen cyclists performed two VIIT sessions, each with six 5-minute intervals.
  • Intervals alternated between 100% and 77% of maximal aerobic power, with vibration applied during high-intensity blocks in one condition.
  • Physiological and perceptual responses were measured.

Main Results:

  • Adding vibration to VIIT did not significantly increase the time spent above 90% of V̇O2max.
  • No significant differences were observed in heart rate, perceptual load, oxygen uptake, ventilation, or blood lactate between conditions.
  • Individual interval analysis also showed no significant between-condition differences.

Conclusions:

  • Intermittent vibration does not enhance the V̇O2max fraction elicited by varied-intensity high-intensity interval training in cyclists.
  • Further research is needed to determine if vibration exposure can improve adaptive stimulus in this training context.
