Predicting suicide risk in older adults is complex. This study identified distinct profiles for repeated self-injury versus suicide reattempts, highlighting the need for tailored prevention strategies for this vulnerable population.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Psychiatry
- Public Health
Background:
- Predicting suicidal vulnerability in older adults based on risk factors is challenging.
- Specific subpopulations require tailored approaches to suicide prevention.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify sociodemographic and clinical predictors of repeated self-injury and suicide reattempts in older adults.
- To assess the modulating effects of these variables using structural equation modelling.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of digital data from 619 individuals (aged 50-96) presenting with repeated self-injury or suicide attempts.
- Data collected from emergency departments in southern Spain.
Main Results:
- Distinct sociodemographic and clinical profiles differentiate between repeated self-injury and suicide reattempt groups.
- Outcome variables were found to directly or indirectly modulate these behaviors.
Conclusions:
- Findings offer limited insight into suicidal vulnerability in older adults.
- Urgent need for specific, psychosocially adapted care protocols for preventing repeated self-injury and suicide reattempts.
- Improvement needed in social/health alert systems and mental health professional presence in emergency departments for older adults at suicide risk.
