Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and describe the location, intensity, quality, and timing of symptoms experienced by office workers standing at sit-stand workstations.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in a simulated office environment.
  • Sixty-three office workers without prior low back pain or sit-stand workstation experience participated.
  • Participants recorded symptoms (pain, stiffness, fatigue) every 15 minutes during a 2-hour standing task, rating intensity on a numerical rating scale (NRS).

Main Results:

  • 84% of participants experienced symptoms, with 48% reporting symptoms within 30 minutes of standing.
  • Symptoms rated ≥2 on the NRS were more prevalent in the lumbar spine, lower extremity, and feet/ankles compared to the upper quadrant.
  • Mean maximal symptom intensity was higher in the lumbar spine than in the upper quadrant and feet/ankles.

Conclusions:

  • Pain, stiffness, and fatigue are common in office workers using sit-stand workstations, especially affecting the lumbar spine, lower extremity, and feet/ankles.
  • Findings suggest physical therapists should advise workers to monitor symptoms and consider changing positions within 30 minutes.
