194
Voiding Cystourethrography (VCUG) and Cystography are specialized radiographic procedures used to examine the structure and function of the bladder and urethra.Voiding Cystourethrography (VCUG)A Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG) is a diagnostic imaging procedure that assesses the anatomy and function of the lower urinary tract. It focuses on the bladder, bladder neck, and urethra, helping detect abnormalities such as vesicoureteral reflux (VUR)—the backward or reverse flow of urine into the...

Introduction:Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, can include a specialized imaging technique of the urinary system known as Magnetic Resonance Urography (MRU). This radiation-free technique uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images with the help of a computer. MRU is particularly effective for visualizing fluid-filled structures like the kidneys, ureters, and bladder.Applications of MRI in the Genitourinary SystemKidneys and Ureters: MRI detects tumors, cysts,...

Imaging Studies II: Ultrasonography

71
IntroductionUltrasonography, or renal ultrasound, is a noninvasive medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and surrounding tissues.Indications for Urinary System UltrasonographyUrinary system ultrasonography is indicated in various clinical scenarios, such as:Kidney Stones (Urolithiasis): To detect and monitor the size and presence of kidney or urinary tract stones.Hydronephrosis: To assess the dilation of the renal pelvis and...

Imaging Studies V: Intravenous Urography and Retrograde Pyelography

235
IntroductionIntravenous Urography (IVU) and Retrograde Pyelography (RP) are important diagnostic imaging techniques used to evaluate the urinary system. These methods help identify structural abnormalities, obstructions, and functional issues in the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. Both procedures use iodine-based contrast media to enhance the visibility of urinary tract structures on X-ray images, though they differ in their methods and indications.1. Imaging Studies I: Kidney, Ureter, and Bladder Studies

52
Kidney, Ureter, and Bladder (KUB) StudiesKidney, Ureter, and Bladder (KUB) studies are standard diagnostic imaging procedures used to assess the anatomy of the urinary system. They are commonly utilized for patients experiencing abdominal pain or urinary symptoms. By using a simple X-ray of the abdomen, KUB studies can reveal structural and pathological abnormalities within the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. These studies are particularly valuable in diagnosing kidney stones, urinary...

Radiological Investigation II: MRI and Ventilation Perfusion Scan

236
Description
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Ventilation Perfusion Scans are two radiological investigations that offer detailed diagnostic images of the body, particularly lung structures.
MRI
MRI uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency signals to distinguish between normal and abnormal tissues. This technology provides a more detailed diagnostic image than CT scans, enabling it to characterize pulmonary nodules, stage bronchogenic carcinoma, and evaluate inflammatory activity in...

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Medical Education
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Bladder magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) interpretation requires specialized training.
  • The Vesical Imaging-Reporting and Data System (VI-RADS) score standardizes bladder cancer staging.
  • Assessing the learning curve for new diagnostic tools is crucial for resident education.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of an interactive training program on radiology residents' learning curve for bladder MRI interpretation.
  • To assess the impact of the training on VI-RADS scoring accuracy and reader performance.

Main Methods:

  • Three radiology residents with limited bladder MRI experience interpreted 200 studies over three months.
  • An interactive educational program with lessons and case-based practice was implemented.
  • Learning curves were analyzed by plotting mean agreement over case batches, using kappa statistics and ROC analysis.

Main Results:

  • Inter-reader agreement for VI-RADS scoring improved significantly post-training, with kappa values increasing notably for all residents.
  • Diagnostic performance showed high sensitivity (84-89%) and specificity (91-94%) for detecting muscle invasion.
  • Mean evaluation time decreased from 5.21 to 3.52 minutes, and confidence improved from 3.31 to 4.21 after interpreting approximately 150 cases.

Conclusions:

  • A dedicated interactive education program enhances bladder MRI interpretation skills and VI-RADS scoring accuracy in radiology residents.
  • Significant improvements in diagnostic performance and reader confidence were observed after interpreting 100-150 cases.
  • The training program effectively reduced interpretation time, indicating increased efficiency.
