Background:

Social media platforms like Instagram are increasingly used for health information dissemination.
Patient concerns and experiences regarding medical treatments are often shared online.
Brachytherapy, a form of radiation therapy, has a growing online presence.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate brachytherapy-related content on Instagram.
To identify patient concerns and the nature of online discussions.
To assess user outreach and the influence of different sources (patients, physicians, hospitals).

Main Methods:

Analysis of #brachytherapy posts on Instagram as of May 7, 2021.
Categorization of posts by source, content type (education vs. experience), and disease site.
Examination of patient-specific posts, including captions and hashtags.
Assessment of user influence based on follower counts.

Main Results:

The majority of brachytherapy posts (79%) originated from patients and general users, not physicians (11%).
Patient posts were predominantly experience-based (99%), while physician posts were mostly educational (66%).
Physicians had a higher median follower count than patients or hospitals.
Commonly reported side effects by gynecological cancer patients included anxiety (50%) and fatigue (31%).

Conclusions:

Physicians hold significant influence on social media regarding brachytherapy.
There is a need for increased, reliable brachytherapy information on platforms like Instagram.
Patients express apprehension due to a lack of information and fear of the unknown.
Enhanced physician engagement on social media can provide patients with better support and trustworthy treatment knowledge.
