Summary

Migraine and depression share brain function changes, but specific alterations in the right paracentral lobule and fusiform are unique to comorbid cases. These findings may serve as biomarkers for these brain disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore functional brain abnormalities in patients with comorbid migraine and depression.
  • To identify common and distinct neural mechanisms between migraine and MDD.
  • To investigate brain function alterations associated with the co-occurrence of these disorders.

Main Methods:

  • Acquisition of high-resolution T1-weighted and resting-state functional MRI data from four groups: comorbid migraine and depression, migraine only, MDD only, and healthy controls.
  • Voxel-wise analysis of variance (ANOVA) and two-sample t-tests were employed for group comparisons.
  • Correlation analysis was performed to link altered brain regions with clinical symptoms.

Main Results:

  • Shared functional brain changes were observed in migraine patients with and without depression.
  • Specific brain function alterations in the right paracentral lobule and fusiform were identified in patients with comorbid migraine and depression.
  • Distinct changes in the left thalamus and frontal gyri were specific to migraine patients, and some brain activity correlated with emotional symptoms.

  • Findings contribute to deciphering the complex neurobiology of migraine and depression comorbidity.
