Background:

  • Existing osteoporosis prediction tools often overlook low BMD preceding the disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a self-reported questionnaire-based method for screening low bone mineral density (BMD).
  • To identify individuals at risk for osteoporosis among perimenopausal and postmenopausal women.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective cohort study involving 198 women aged 40-70.
  • Collected data included age, BMI, fracture history, back pain, height loss, kyphosis, family history, and menopause status.
  • Discriminant analysis was used to develop a scoring tool for predicting low BMD (young adult mean <80%).

  • 32.3% of participants had low BMD (young adult mean <80%).
  • A scoring tool was developed using age, BMI, lower back pain, height loss, and menopause.
