Sexually Transmitted Infections01:26

Sexually Transmitted Infections

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are diseases transmitted primarily through unsafe sexual interactions. Bacteria, viruses, or parasites cause them and can result in severe health complications if untreated.ChlamydiaThe bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for the disease Chlamydia, the most common STI in the United States. This peculiar pathogen requires human cells to reproduce, residing intracellularly. The initial infection often goes unnoticed because it typically does not...

Viral Recombination

23.9K
Cells are sometimes infected by more than one virus at once. When two viruses disassemble to expose their genomes for replication in the same cell, similar regions of their genomes can pair together and exchange sequences in a process called recombination. Alternatively, viruses with segmented genomes can swap segments in a process called reassortment.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Social Sciences

Background:

  • Men who have sex with men (MSM) engaging in voluntary HIV counseling and testing (VCT) often report high-risk sexual behaviors and networks.
  • Limited research exists on utilizing motivational interviewing and social platforms for partner referral in HIV testing among MSM.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of VCT partner referral via social networking platforms on HIV testing outcomes in MSM.
  • To compare characteristics and risk behaviors of MSM tested with and without referrals.
  • To explore sexual affiliations using social network analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study using purposeful and respondent-driven sampling in Taipei City.
  • Partner-elicited interviews conducted to motivate MSM for referrals via the Line app.
  • Rapid HIV testing for referred sexual partners, with repeated recruitment.

Main Results:

  • 28.2% of index subjects referred sexual partners, leading to 127 referrals via Line.
  • Referred MSM exhibited higher rates of multiple partners, frequent anal intercourse, and prior lack of HIV testing.
  • A new HIV-seropositivity rate of 2.4% was observed among referred partners, higher than other groups. Social network analysis identified transmission bridges.

Conclusions:

  • Partner-elicited interviews effectively promote HIV testing referrals and case identification among MSM through platforms like Line.
  • Social network analysis is crucial for understanding sexual affiliations and developing targeted HIV prevention strategies for MSM.
