The ABCA7 rs3764650 gene variant is linked to delayed neurocognitive recovery after surgery in elderly Chinese Han populations. The GG genotype may predispose individuals to postoperative cognitive impairment.
Area of Science:
- Genetics
- Neuroscience
- Geriatrics
Background:
- ATP-binding cassette transporter A7 (ABCA7) gene variations are implicated in cognitive impairment.
- Previous research suggests a link between ABCA7 gene variation and cognitive decline.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between the ABCA7 rs3764650 polymorphism and perioperative neurocognitive disorder (pNCD).
- To explore the role of ABCA7 gene variants in postoperative cognitive dysfunction.
Main Methods:
- 132 elderly patients undergoing elective non-cardiac surgery and 28 healthy controls were enrolled.
- Neuropsychological tests were administered preoperatively and at 7 days and 3 months postoperatively.
- Genotyping of ABCA7 rs3764650 was performed using PCR and RFLP analysis.
Main Results:
- Incidences of delayed neurocognitive recovery (dNCR) and postoperative cognitive disorder (POCD) were 29.7% and 16.8%, respectively.
- Higher G allele and GG genotype frequencies were observed in patients with dNCR at 7 days post-surgery (P=0.035 and P=0.013).
- No significant association was found between ABCA7 alleles and POCD at 3 months post-surgery.
Conclusions:
- The ABCA7 rs3764650 polymorphism is associated with dNCR in elderly surgical patients.
- The GG genotype of ABCA7 rs3764650 may be a predisposing factor for postoperative cognitive impairment in Chinese Han elderly individuals.
