The incidence of perioperative cardiovascular complications after spine surgery is 0.6%. Scoliosis surgery and a history of congestive heart failure are significant risk factors requiring close patient monitoring.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Neurosurgery
- Orthopedic Surgery
Background:
- Growing number of patients undergoing spine surgery.
- Associated risk of cardiovascular complications.
- Insufficient evidence on incidence and risk factors.
Purpose of the Study:
- Determine incidence of perioperative cardiovascular complications.
- Identify risk factors for these complications in spine surgery patients.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective study of 1,002 spine surgery patients (Jan 2018 - Dec 2019).
- Data collected from electronic medical records.
- Univariate and multivariate analyses to identify risk factors.
Main Results:
- Six patients (0.6%) experienced cardiac complications.
- Complications included acute myocardial infarction, cardiac arrest, and congestive heart failure.
- Risk factors: scoliosis surgery (OR: 18.61) and history of congestive heart failure (OR: 120.97).
Conclusions:
- Low incidence (0.6%) of perioperative cardiovascular complications in spine surgery.
- Scoliosis surgery and prior congestive heart failure are key risk factors.
- Close monitoring and optimal management are crucial for high-risk patients.

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection
The integrity and count of the white blood cells help the body resist pathogens and fight infection. When impaired, it reduces the body's resistance to pathogens. The acidic pH levels of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary tracts, and skin...
