Does obstructive sleep apnoea modulate cardiac autonomic function in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation?

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) patients is linked to increased parasympathetic and reduced sympathetic nervous system activity during non-REM sleep. This study compared cardiac autonomic function in PAF patients with and without OSA.

- This study provides novel insights into heart rate variability in PAF patients with and without OSA, indicating limited overall HRV differences between the groups.
- However, the results suggest a chronic state of increased parasympathetic and relatively reduced sympathetic nervous system modulation in PAF patients with OSA during Non-REM sleep.
- Further research is warranted to elucidate the long-term implications of these autonomic alterations in the context of OSA and atrial fibrillation.
