Summary

Long COVID headaches are common, but this study found no evidence of cardio-pulmonary dysfunction contributing to persistent headaches after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Further research is needed to understand headache causes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate potential links between cardio-pulmonary dysfunction and persistent headaches in long COVID patients.
  • To compare demographic, clinical, and functional characteristics of patients with and without long COVID headaches.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control analysis nested within a prospective cohort study.
  • Recruited 70 COVID-19 patients (August-December 2020).
  • Compared groups based on the presence of persistent headaches for three months post-COVID-19 resolution, assessing demographics, clinical data, biomarkers, quality of life, and cardio-pulmonary function.

Main Results:

  • 10 patients (14.3%) experienced long COVID headaches.
  • Headache patients were younger and predominantly female.
  • No significant differences were found in laboratory analyses, echocardiography, exercise tests, or pulmonary function tests between groups.

Conclusions:

  • This exploratory study found no significant cardio-pulmonary dysfunction in patients with long COVID headaches.
  • Mid-term follow-up did not reveal a link between cardio-pulmonary function and persistent headaches after SARS-CoV-2 infection.
