Argentinian people with multiple sclerosis (MS) show distinct preferences for information and decision-making, with most preferring active or shared roles. Their actual decision-making process (DMP) largely aligned with these preferences.

Background:

  • Limited data exists on the decision-making process (DMP) for people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) in Latin America.
  • Understanding patient preferences is crucial for effective healthcare delivery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the DMP in Argentinean PwMS.
  • To assess the relationship between DMP, patient preferences, and clinical-demographic factors.

Main Methods:

  • A web-based survey was administered to 1275 PwMS in Argentina.
  • Data collected included clinical-demographics, physician information perception, decisional control preferences, and satisfaction with care.
  • Questionnaires assessed patient preferences for information sources and their role in DMP.

Main Results:

  • 379 PwMS completed the survey; most were female (67%), mean age 40.3 years.
  • Preferred decisional roles were active (47%), shared (27%), and passive (26%).
  • A moderate concordance (kappa=0.55) was found between patient preferences and self-reported DMP. 72% of patients experienced DMP aligned with their preferences.

Conclusions:

  • Argentinian PwMS exhibit unique preferences for information management and shared decision-making.
  • Healthcare providers should tailor communication and decision-making strategies to individual patient preferences in multiple sclerosis care.
