11Department of Medicine, College of Medicine, University of Mosul; 2Ibn Sina Teaching Hospital, Mosul, Iraq.
Fibromyalgia (FM) is more common in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients, especially women. Those with both conditions experienced longer disease duration, higher severity, and more depression.
Area of Science:
- Pulmonary Medicine
- Rheumatology
- Psychiatry
Background:
- Limited data exists on fibromyalgia (FM) prevalence in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients.
- Understanding this comorbidity is crucial for comprehensive patient care.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the frequency of FM in COPD patients.
- To characterize features of COPD patients with co-occurring FM.
Main Methods:
- A case-control study involving 70 COPD patients and 70 controls.
- Fibromyalgia diagnosis used the 2011 modified ACR criteria.
- Demographic data, COPD characteristics, pulmonary function tests, and Chest-X-ray were assessed.
Main Results:
- Fibromyalgia was diagnosed in 22.9% of COPD patients versus 5.7% of controls (P<0.05).
- FM was significantly more prevalent in female COPD patients (58.33%) than males (15.52%).
- COPD patients with FM had longer disease duration, greater severity, and higher Beck Depression Inventory scores.
Conclusions:
- Fibromyalgia occurs more frequently in COPD patients than in the general population.
- Female gender is associated with a higher risk of FM in COPD.
- Comorbid FM in COPD patients is linked to increased disease burden and depressive symptoms.
