    Summary

    Orthodontic treatment with piezocision, a surgical technique, and collagen matrix did not increase lower incisor or canine root resorption compared to standard orthodontic treatment. Further research with larger patient groups is recommended.

    Background:

    • Root resorption is a common side effect of orthodontic treatment.
    • Piezocision and collagen matrices are innovative techniques used to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement.
    • The potential impact of these techniques on root resorption requires quantitative evaluation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantitatively assess lower incisor and canine root resorption in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment.
    • To compare root resorption between patients treated with piezocision and/or a 3D collagen xenograft matrix versus a control group.
    • To determine if accelerated orthodontic techniques increase the risk of root resorption.

    Main Methods:

    • Secondary analysis of cone-beam computed tomography scans from 32 periodontally healthy patients.
    • Patients were divided into four groups: control, piezocision only, piezocision with 3D collagen matrix, and 3D collagen matrix only.
    • Quantitative assessment of lower incisor and canine root length changes from before (T0) to after (T1) orthodontic treatment.

    Main Results:

    • A statistically significant decrease in root length was observed across all groups from T0 to T1 (P < .05).
    • No significant differences in the amount of root length decrease were found among the four treatment groups.
    • Piezocision and/or 3D collagen matrix did not lead to increased root resorption compared to the control group.

    Conclusions:

    • Orthodontic treatment combined with piezocision does not elevate the risk of root resorption in lower incisors and canines.
    • The use of a 3D collagen xenograft matrix in conjunction with piezocision also did not show increased root resorption.
    • Larger sample size studies are needed to confirm these findings and their clinical implications.
