Background:

The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges to healthcare professionals globally.
Plastic surgeons, across various practice settings and career stages, experienced significant disruptions.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on plastic surgery practices in India.
To identify challenges faced by public/private sector, reconstructive/aesthetic practices, and consultants/residents.
To propose evidence-based solutions for mitigating pandemic-related issues.

Main Methods:

An all-India survey was conducted using Google Forms, circulated via WhatsApp and email in August 2020.
The survey included closed and semi-open questions on personal/professional life changes, coping strategies, and suggestions.
Responses from 220 consenting participants were analyzed using SPSS software.

Main Results:

Public hospital practitioners, particularly residents, faced increased administrative duties, leading to anxiety, burnout, and academic concerns.
Aesthetic surgeons reported significant financial losses.
Reduced patient interaction and difficulties with personal protective equipment (PPE) were common.

Conclusions:

Plastic surgeons experienced decreased caseloads, financial strain, increased workload (especially residents), and mental health issues.
Proposed solutions include adhering to safety protocols, inter-sectoral collaboration for COVID duties, resident workload management, telemedicine adoption, and social support.
Addressing these challenges is crucial for maintaining surgical practice and surgeon well-being.
