Background:

The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the vital role of nursing globally.
Advanced practice nursing (APN) has existed for over 50 years, but its development varies worldwide.
The Better Health Programme Mexico (2019) aimed to advance APN in Mexico, using the UK model.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the underpinning frameworks of advanced practice nursing in the United Kingdom and Mexico.
To examine current practices, regulatory structures, and support systems for APN in both nations.

Main Methods:

Comparative analysis of existing advanced practice nursing frameworks.
Review of nursing regulation, systems, and processes in the UK and Mexico.
Gap analysis conducted as part of the Better Health Programme.

Main Results:

Significant differences exist in the development and regulatory frameworks for advanced practice nursing between the UK and Mexico.
A gap analysis identified challenges in developing APN in both countries.
There is a recognized need for stakeholder consensus on a robust regulatory approach for APN.

Conclusions:

Both the UK and Mexico face challenges in advancing their respective advanced practice nursing roles.
Strengthening the advanced practice nurse role requires addressing regulatory and systemic issues in both countries.
Collaborative strategies are needed to enhance APN frameworks and regulation.
