Cognitive Development During Adulthood

335
Cognitive development continues throughout adulthood, undergoing significant shifts across early, middle, and late stages. Individual transition occurs from adolescent idealism to pragmatic and adaptable thinking in early adulthood. During this period, individuals learn to integrate personal beliefs with the recognition that other perspectives are equally valid. Exposure to the complexities of modern society, diverse experiences, and higher education contribute to this adaptive thought process,...

Summary

Aging brains show a shift in neural activity from back to front, even at rest. This study reveals changes in brain connectivity patterns in older adults, suggesting a general aging brain feature.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Aging Brain Research

Background:

  • Human brain activity patterns change with age, typically shifting from posterior to anterior regions during tasks.
  • Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has primarily shown these age-related shifts during task execution.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if age-related shifts in neural activity occur during resting-state conditions.
  • To examine changes in brain connectivity and network organization associated with aging using electroencephalography (EEG).

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of oscillatory power distribution in source-space time series from electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings during rest.
  • Evaluation of inter-area and intra-area brain connectivity changes with age.

Main Results:

  • A significant shift in oscillatory power from posterior to anterior brain areas was observed in older adults.
  • Strengthened inter-area connectivity in frontal, parietal, and temporal regions was noted in older individuals.
  • Age-related changes in intra-area connections showed enhancement in parietal/temporal and reduction in frontal areas, with overall decreased network modularity.

Conclusions:

  • The findings confirm an age-related posterior-to-anterior shift in neural activity during resting-state, indicating it's a general aging brain characteristic.
  • The study provides novel insights into the reorganization of resting-state brain networks, including altered connectivity patterns, in the aging brain.
