Summary

Promoting active choices in physical activity interventions did not significantly improve intentions or behaviors in inactive adults. However, one intervention group showed increased commitment and perceived physical activity gains, particularly in women.

Background:

  • Active choices, defined as conscious and value-congruent decisions, may enhance physical activity interventions.
  • This study examined the impact of promoting active versus passive choices on behavioral and psychological outcomes in inactive adults.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether promoting an active choice influences physical activity intentions, behaviors, autonomy, and commitment compared to passive choice.
  • To explore the effectiveness of different active choice promotion strategies, including action planning.

Main Methods:

  • A web-based, four-arm randomized controlled trial involving 564 physically inactive Dutch adults.
  • Intervention groups received either guidelines only, guidelines plus information, guidelines plus active choice promotion, or guidelines plus active choice and action planning.
  • Outcomes were assessed via self-report questionnaires pre-intervention and at follow-up; psychological outcomes were measured post-intervention and at follow-up.

Main Results:

  • Active choice interventions (GA and GA+) did not significantly improve physical activity intentions or behaviors.
  • The GA+ group reported higher commitment and perceived increases in physical activity; the GA group reported a more active choice.
  • The GI group showed improvements in intention strength, autonomy, and commitment; gender and health conditions modified intervention effects.

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence does not convincingly support active versus passive choice interventions for increasing physical activity in inactive adults.
  • Future research should focus on gender-sensitive and health-condition-aware active choice interventions to improve physical activity engagement.
