COVID-19 vaccine acceptance in Bosnia and Herzegovina was influenced by risk perception, trust, and education. Female gender, perceived media hype, and vaccine origin country were barriers to vaccine intention.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Vaccinology
- Behavioral Science
Background:
- Understanding COVID-19 vaccine acceptance is crucial for public health.
- Identifying country-specific factors influencing vaccine intentions is essential for effective rollout strategies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate country-specific drivers and barriers of positive COVID-19 vaccine intentions.
- To analyze attitudes towards accepting a future COVID-19 vaccine in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH).
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional study utilizing an online behavioral insights survey.
- Three survey waves conducted in July, September, and December 2020, with approximately 1,000 adults each.
- Fixed-effects regression analysis to explore predictors of vaccine acceptance.
Main Results:
- Positive predictors included COVID-19 risk perception, trust in health institutions, negative affect, urban living, and college education.
- Negative predictors were being female, perception of media hype, and country of vaccine production.
- Study provides insights into vaccine acceptance and hesitancy in FBiH during 2020.
Conclusions:
- Findings offer valuable insights for COVID-19 vaccine introduction and rollout in FBiH.
- Further research needed to understand demographic, cultural, and behavioral contexts of vaccination perceptions.
- Addressing identified barriers is key to improving vaccine uptake in the region.
