    • Hammond (1871, 1878) considered cerebral congestion more prevalent than other nervous system affections.

    • The theory of cerebral congestion explained a broad spectrum of neurological symptoms and conditions.
    • The advent of accurate bedside blood pressure measurement (Riva-Rocci, 1896; Korotkov, 1905) rendered the cerebral congestion theory obsolete.

    • The shift away from cerebral congestion reflects advancements in diagnostic capabilities and etiological understanding of cerebrovascular events.
