    Summary

    Hypoglycin A, a toxin in unripe ackees, causes severe hypoglycemia in rats. However, this study found no significant changes in insulin levels, suggesting a non-insulin related mechanism for the hypoglycemia.

    Background:

    • Jamaican vomiting sickness is linked to consuming unripe ackees, which contain the toxin hypoglycin A.
    • Hypoglycin A is known to induce hypoglycemia, a dangerous drop in blood glucose.
    • The exact mechanism by which hypoglycin A causes hypoglycemia is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of hypoglycin A on insulin levels.
    • To determine if altered insulin levels contribute to hypoglycin A-induced hypoglycemia.
    • To elucidate the mechanism of action of hypoglycin A in causing hypoglycemia.

    • Thirty Wistar rats received hypoglycin A intravenously.
