Summary

Shoulder pain from the long head of the biceps tendon often requires surgical treatment. Biceps tenodesis, a procedure to reattach the biceps tendon, offers better outcomes than tenotomy, preserving muscle function and appearance.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Sports Medicine
  • Shoulder Arthroscopy

Background:

  • The long head of the biceps tendon is a common source of shoulder pain.
  • Pathologies include SLAP lesions, pulley injuries, tears, and tendonitis.
  • Surgical intervention like tenotomy or tenodesis is often necessary during shoulder arthroscopy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a novel single-portal technique for proximal biceps tenodesis.
  • To describe the use of an all-suture anchor for biceps tenodesis in the bicipital groove.

Main Methods:

  • A single-portal arthroscopic approach was utilized.
  • An all-suture anchor was employed for the tenodesis procedure.
  • The technique focused on proximal biceps tenodesis within the bicipital groove.

Main Results:

  • The described technique facilitates biceps tenodesis through a single portal.
  • This method aims to preserve biceps muscle tension, anatomy, and cosmesis.
  • It offers an alternative to tenotomy, potentially reducing persistent pain and revision rates.

Conclusions:

  • Proximal biceps tenodesis using a single-portal, all-suture anchor technique is feasible.
  • This approach may provide superior functional and cosmetic outcomes compared to tenotomy.
  • It represents a valuable option for managing long head of biceps pathologies during shoulder arthroscopy.
