This study identified a specific microRNA (miRNA) expression profile in the blood plasma of elderly patients with sarcopenia. This profile could serve as a novel biomarker for diagnosing sarcopenia and assessing muscle function decline.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Molecular Biology
- Biomarkers
Background:
- Sarcopenia, an age-associated loss of muscle mass and function, affects many older adults.
- It is of growing interest across various medical specialties, including internal medicine, geriatrics, and cardiology.
- Current diagnostic and classification methods for sarcopenia's severity need further refinement.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify a specific microRNA (miRNA) expression profile associated with sarcopenia.
- To evaluate the potential of circulating miRNAs as biomarkers for sarcopenia diagnosis and severity classification.
- To correlate miRNA expression levels with muscle performance in elderly individuals.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of circulating miRNA expression in the blood plasma of 80 elderly patients (55-86 years) with varying degrees of muscle performance deterioration.
- Classification of patients based on the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) score.
- Quantification of specific muscle tissue-specific miRNAs (MyomiRNAs), including miRNA-1, miRNA-29a/b, miRNA-133a/b, miRNA-206, miRNA-208b, and miRNA-499.
Main Results:
- A distinct miRNA expression profile was identified in patients with sarcopenia.
- Patients with lower muscle performance exhibited increased expression of miRNA-1, miRNA-29a, and miRNA-29b.
- Conversely, decreased expression was observed for miRNA-206, miRNA-133a, miRNA-133b, miRNA-208b, and miRNA-499 in patients with low muscle performance.
Conclusions:
- The identified miRNA expression profile in blood plasma shows potential as a specific biomarker for sarcopenia diagnostics.
- The severity of muscle performance deterioration in sarcopenia correlates with specific circulating miRNA expression patterns.
- Further clinical studies are warranted to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms and validate these findings.

Musculoskeletal disorders
Musculoskeletal disorders involve injuries and conditions affecting the skeletal muscles and associated connective tissues. These disorders can arise from acute biomechanical stresses or chronic overuse and can occur across different age groups. Common injuries include sprains, fractures, and muscular strains, often resulting from...
