New bone formation over dehiscent semicircular canal with cartilage cap

Cartilage caps used to repair superior semicircular canal dehiscence can lead to new bone formation. This new bone at the repair site may appear as bony closure on follow-up CT scans.

Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the detection of new bone formation after surgical cartilage cap placement over a dehiscent semicircular canal.
- To assess the radiographic appearance of cartilage cap repairs on follow-up computed tomography (CT).

- Retrospective review of temporal bone CT exams from 20 patients (5 post-operative, 15 controls).
- Two blinded neuroradiologists assessed CT scans for semicircular canal dehiscence.
- Evaluated for new bone formation at the surgical site in post-operative patients.

- 100% inter-observer agreement in identifying dehiscence in control subjects.
- In post-operative patients, 4 out of 5 cases showed agreement of no dehiscence.
- One post-operative case showed agreement of dehiscence, with ectopic bone noted adjacent to the repair.

- New bone formation is observable at the cartilage cap placement site.
- This new bone can be misinterpreted as complete bony closure of the superior semicircular canal dehiscence on CT imaging.
