    Summary

    Testicular cysts are more common than previously thought, found in nearly 10% of men via high-resolution ultrasound. Further research is needed to understand the clinical significance of these common testicular findings.

    Background:

    • Testicular cysts were historically considered a rare clinical finding.
    • Limited data exists on the actual prevalence of testicular cysts in the general male population.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the prevalence of testicular cysts using high-resolution ultrasonography.
    • To characterize the types and distribution of observed testicular cysts.

    Main Methods:

    • High-resolution ultrasonography (10 MHz) was performed on 307 adult males.
    • Cadaveric testes (n=80) were also scanned to assess for cysts.
    • Intraoperative aspiration and surgical pathology were used in select cases.

    Main Results:

    • Testicular cysts were identified in 30 out of 307 men (9.8%).
    • Thirty-three testes exhibited cysts, including single cysts (n=23), multiple tiny cysts (n=8), and multiple foci (n=2).
    • One cyst of the tunica albuginea was confirmed surgically; another cyst was aspirated.

    Conclusions:

    • Testicular cysts appear to be significantly more common than previously reported.
    • The clinical significance and need for follow-up of these lesions require further investigation.
    • High-resolution ultrasound is effective in detecting testicular cysts.
