Nursing Evaluation

The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.

Background:

Fundamental nursing practicum is crucial for nursing students' initial clinical experience.
No validated tool currently exists to assess core competence during this foundational practicum.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate the Core Competence in Fundamental Nursing Practicum Scale.
To establish the reliability and validity of this new measurement tool.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional design was employed with nursing students in Southern Taiwan.
Content, face, and factorial validity were assessed, followed by exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses.
Internal consistency reliability was determined using Cronbach's alpha.

Main Results:

The final 25-item scale comprises 5 domains: communication, nursing process application, basic biomedical science, nursing skills, and professional attitude.
Factor analyses confirmed a robust structure explaining 70.14% of the variance.
The scale demonstrated high reliability with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.94.

Conclusions:

The Core Competence in Fundamental Nursing Practicum Scale is a valid and reliable instrument.
It can be utilized by educators to identify and address core competency deficits in nursing students.
The scale supports curriculum refinement for better preparation of novice nurses.
