Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder01:30

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

334
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings....

Gustation, or the sense of taste, is intrinsically linked to the anatomical structures located on the tongue. This organ's surface, along with the entirety of the oral cavity, is adorned with stratified squamous epithelium. Evident on the tongue are elevated structures known as papillae (singular = papilla), which house the mechanisms for the transduction of gustatory stimuli. Four distinct types of papillae exist, each identified by their unique morphological attributes: the circumvallate,...

Factors Affecting Perception01:25

Factors Affecting Perception

1.9K
Perception is influenced by perceptual set, context, motivation, and emotion. Perceptual set, or perceptual expectancy, refers to the tendency to perceive things in a particular way, influenced by previous experiences and expectations. This phenomenon affects the interpretation of stimuli, creating a set of mental tendencies and assumptions that impact sensory perceptions of sound, taste, touch, and sight.
An illustrative example of a perceptual set is the scenario where an airline pilot told...

Summary

Adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) exhibit unhealthier eating patterns. Despite this, their perceptions of food benefits and risks are similar to those without ADHD, indicating a behavioral discrepancy.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Adults with ADHD often display unhealthy eating habits, contributing to overweight and obesity.
  • Existing research highlights a link between ADHD and poor dietary choices.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if adults with ADHD have different perceptions of food benefits and risks compared to neurotypical individuals.
  • To explore the relationship between ADHD, eating behaviors, and food-related perceptions.

Main Methods:

  • A study involving 105 university students (36 with ADHD, 69 without), aged 22-30.
  • Participants rated the frequency, likelihood, attractiveness, convenience, and risk of 32 healthy and unhealthy food items.

Main Results:

  • The ADHD group showed significantly lower ratios of healthy/unhealthy food consumption frequency.
  • No significant differences were found in the likelihood of food consumption or perceptions of attractiveness, convenience, and risk between groups.

Conclusions:

  • Adults with ADHD demonstrate a notable discrepancy between their eating behaviors (more unhealthy patterns) and their perceptions of food benefits and risks.
  • This suggests that awareness or perception of food properties may not directly translate into healthier eating choices for individuals with ADHD.
