Modeling in Therapy

161
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy01:25

Interpersonal Psychotherapy

106
Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a structured, time-limited therapeutic approach initially developed to treat depression. It integrates key concepts from psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral therapies, making it a uniquely eclectic framework. The therapy is rooted in the interpersonal theories of Adolph Meyer and Harry Stack Sullivan, as well as John Bowlby's attachment theory, and focuses on the interplay between interpersonal relationships and emotional well-being.

Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Education
  • Psychology
  • Teamwork Dynamics

Background:

  • Modern healthcare demands interdisciplinary collaboration, requiring adaptability from professionals and students.
  • Interprofessional education (IPE) trains future clinicians for diverse teams and patient populations.
  • Mindfulness is increasingly valued for performance enhancement in healthcare settings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the predictive power of trait mindfulness on training outcomes in interprofessional education (IPE).
  • To examine how individual differences in trait mindfulness influence effectiveness in simulation-based IPE.

Main Methods:

  • Two prospective observational studies were conducted with two IPE cohort samples.
  • Study 1 involved medical and nursing students (n=136).
  • Study 2 expanded to five health professions (n=232) with follow-up assessments.

Main Results:

  • Trait mindfulness predicted perceived teamwork behaviors in Study 1.
  • In Study 2, trait mindfulness predicted team efficacy and skill transfer one month post-training.
  • Long-term follow-up (16 months) showed mindfulness predicted knowledge retention and teamwork attitudes.

Conclusions:

  • Trait mindfulness is a significant predictor of diverse training outcomes in interprofessional education.
  • Findings support the integration of mindfulness assessment and training in healthcare education.
  • Results have implications for advancing mindfulness research and evaluating IPE effectiveness.
