Background:

Textile waste presents a significant environmental challenge.
Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) are effective adsorbents.
Developing sustainable precursors for ACFs is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

To synthesize activated carbon fibers from cotton textile waste.
To characterize the structure and pore properties of the synthesized ACFs.
To evaluate the absorption performance of ACFs for oils and organic solvents.

Main Methods:

Cotton textile waste was used as a precursor.
Activated carbon fibers were produced via a specific synthesis process.
Freeze-drying was employed to achieve a tubular structure and specific pore size distribution.
Absorption capabilities were tested against various oils (e.g., olive oil) and organic solvents (e.g., gasoline, chloroform).

Main Results:

Tubular activated carbon fibers with an exfoliated surface were successfully synthesized.
The freeze-drying process resulted in a desirable tubular structure and large pore size distribution.
The synthesized ACFs exhibited high absorption capabilities for olive oil, gasoline, and chloroform.
Performance was among the highest reported for cellulose-based carbon adsorbents.

Conclusions:

Cotton textile waste can be effectively converted into high-performance activated carbon fibers.
The developed ACFs demonstrate excellent potential for oil spill remediation and solvent absorption.
This approach offers a sustainable valorization pathway for textile waste.
