Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of the Codonics Safe Label System (ALS) on medication labeling compliance.
  • To assess the impact of ALS on PAR inventory control by measuring medication discrepancies.
  • To determine the user acceptability of the ALS among healthcare providers in the OR.

Main Methods:

  • A pre- and post-implementation audit of anesthesia workstations and electronic records was conducted to assess medication discrepancies.
  • Syringe labeling compliance was evaluated through direct observation.
  • An anonymous electronic survey assessed provider acceptability of the ALS.

Main Results:

  • The daily medication discrepancy rate decreased from 9.7% to 6.1% post-ALS implementation (P < .0001).
  • Medication labeling compliance increased from 47.4% to 100% (P < .0001).
