Bacterial Signaling01:30

Bacterial Signaling

35.1K
Bacterial signaling can occur within bacteria (intracellular) or between bacteria (intercellular). At times, a group of bacteria behaves like a community. To achieve this, they engage in quorum sensing, the perception of higher cell density that causes changes in gene expression. Quorum sensing involves both extracellular and intracellular signaling. The signaling cascade starts with a molecule called an autoinducer (AI). Individual bacteria produce AIs that move out of the bacterial cell...

Summary

Patients with periimplantitis showed higher mercury levels and lower aluminum levels in saliva compared to controls. Blood serum revealed decreased titanium, chromium, and iodine in the periimplantitis group, indicating potential trace element alterations.

Area of Science:

  • Biomaterials Science
  • Dental Implantology
  • Trace Element Analysis

Background:

  • Dental implants commonly use pure titanium and Ti6Al4V alloy.
  • Trace element release from implants is a potential health concern, especially with periimplantitis.
  • Periimplantitis increases the risk of implant corrosion and trace element release due to external factors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate trace element levels in blood serum and saliva of patients with periimplantitis.
  • To compare these levels with a control group of patients with healthy osseointegrated implants.

Main Methods:

  • Involved 25 patients diagnosed with periimplantitis and 25 controls.
  • Measured trace element levels in blood serum and saliva using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).
  • Analyzed results statistically.

Main Results:

  • Saliva: Significantly lower aluminum (Al) and higher mercury (Hg) levels in the periimplantitis group compared to controls.
  • Blood Serum: Significantly decreased titanium (Ti), chromium (Cr), and iodine (I) in the periimplantitis group.
  • No significant differences were found for other measured trace elements in blood serum or saliva (except Al and Hg).

Conclusions:

  • No statistically significant increase in titanium or aluminum levels was observed in the periimplantitis group compared to the control group.
  • The study highlights altered trace element profiles (Hg, Al, Ti, Cr, I) in patients with periimplantitis.
