Ocular involvement in STEC-associated hemolytic uremic syndrome

Ocular complications are present in 13% of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli hemolytic uremic syndrome (STEC-HUS) patients. Abnormal funduscopic exams correlate with severe STEC-HUS, particularly with central nervous system involvement and hemorrhagic colitis.

- Abnormal FE findings included hemorrhagic exudates and Purtscher-like retinopathy.
- Abnormal FE significantly associated with severe CNS involvement (p=0.0191) and hemorrhagic colitis (p=0.012).
Conclusions:
- FE abnormalities occur in 13% of HUS patients.
- Abnormal FE is linked to more severe HUS, especially with CNS disease and hemorrhagic colitis.
- Recommend FE in severe HUS cases, particularly those with CNS involvement.
