Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Surgical Training
  • Augmented Reality (AR) Technology

Background:

  • Current self-training resources are inadequate for mastering open surgical procedures.
  • A novel system offering 3D procedural insights via AR is needed.
  • This study compares AR to instructional video for open surgery suturing self-learning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness and usability of an AR-based self-training system.
  • To compare AR training against traditional instructional videos for surgical suturing.
  • To assess novice surgical trainees' experience with AR and video methods.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, evaluator-blinded, randomized controlled study.
  • Novice medical students trained with AR or instructional video for suturing.
  • Pretest-posttest design with blinded evaluation of recorded procedures.

Main Results:

  • Both AR and video groups showed significant improvement in suturing scores (p < 0.001).
  • No significant difference in overall score improvement or system usability between AR and video groups.
  • AR system's motion guidance was significantly more helpful for instrument manipulation (p = 0.02).

Conclusions:

  • AR systems are comparable to instructional videos in understandability and ease of use for novice surgical training.
  • AR training shows potential for enhancing specific aspects of surgical skill acquisition, like instrument handling.
  • Both AR and video are viable tools for self-learning basic surgical techniques.
