Hearing

53.2K
When we hear a sound, our nervous system is detecting sound waves—pressure waves of mechanical energy traveling through a medium. The frequency of the wave is perceived as pitch, while the amplitude is perceived as loudness.

Area of Science:

  • Audiology
  • Psychoacoustics
  • Signal Processing

Background:

  • Auditory temporal resolution is crucial for speech perception.
  • Current methods for measuring gap detection thresholds (GDTs) are time-consuming and require specialized clinical facilities.
  • There is a need for faster, more accessible methods to assess GDTs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a fast, affordable, and reliable application-based method for determining GDTs.
  • To assess the feasibility of measuring GDTs outside of a soundproof booth.
  • To compare the proposed method's screening time with traditional approaches.

Main Methods:

  • A MATLAB®-based application was developed for GDT measurement.
  • Acoustic stimuli consisted of silent gaps within white noise segments.
  • GDTs were measured in 42 normal-hearing subjects both inside and outside a soundproof booth.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference was found between GDTs measured inside (5.12 ± 1.02 ms) and outside (4.78 ± 1.16 ms) the soundproof booth.
  • The proposed method achieved GDT screening in approximately 5 minutes, significantly faster than traditional methods.
  • Measured GDTs were comparable to those reported in existing literature.

Conclusions:

  • The proposed application provides a fast, reliable, and accessible tool for screening auditory temporal resolution via GDTs.
  • This method overcomes the limitations of traditional GDT assessment, enhancing clinical utility.
  • The application's performance inside and outside a soundproof booth validates its flexibility for diverse settings.
