Endoscopic Procedures III: Video Capsule Endoscopy

341
Capsule endoscopy, or wireless or video capsule endoscopy, is a diagnostic procedure for examining the entire gastrointestinal tract. Patients swallow a capsule about the size of a vitamin tablet. The capsule is equipped with a transmitter, a battery, an LED light source, and a color video camera to capture images throughout the gastrointestinal tract. This procedure is particularly useful for diagnosing conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, tumors, polyps, ulcers,...

Area of Science:

  • Surgical Technology
  • Endoscopic Surgery
  • Head and Neck Surgery

Background:

  • High-definition 3D exoscopes are novel tools for clinical use.
  • These systems enhance precise dissection of delicate structures during surgery.
  • Preliminary experience with 3D exoscopes in thyroid surgery is explored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the preliminary experience and potential advantages of using a 3D exoscope in open thyroid surgery.
  • To assess the feasibility and safety of 3D exoscope-assisted thyroidectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Open thyroid surgery was performed using a high-definition 3D exoscope (3D VITOM®).
  • The exoscope was mounted on a VERSACRANE™ holding system.
  • Procedures included thyroidectomy and central compartment dissection.

Main Results:

  • The 3D exoscope was successfully used in three patients.
  • No significant intra-operative delays or complications were observed.
  • Precise dissection facilitated identification and preservation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and parathyroid glands.

Conclusions:

  • 3D exoscope-assisted thyroid surgery appears feasible and safe.
  • Further research is warranted to investigate the clinical benefits in the post-operative period.
  • The system shows promise for enhancing surgical precision in thyroid procedures.
