    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Occupational Health
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Hypertension management is crucial for cardiovascular health.
    • Antihypertensive medications can have side effects impacting daily life.
    • Work performance and absenteeism are important patient-centered outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of captopril, methyldopa, and propranolol on work performance and absenteeism in hypertensive patients.
    • To compare the impact of these antihypertensive agents on mental acuity, job satisfaction, and fatigue.

    Main Methods:

    • Multicentre, randomized, double-blind clinical trial.
    • 626 male hypertensive patients assigned to captopril, methyldopa, or propranolol, with or without diuretics.
    • 24-week treatment period with assessment of work performance and absenteeism.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Captopril monotherapy significantly improved mental acuity and job satisfaction-morale compared to baseline.
    • Methyldopa monotherapy led to significant worsening in work performance measures.
    • Withdrawal due to fatigue was higher with methyldopa and propranolol compared to captopril. Absenteeism did not differ between groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Antihypertensive medications have differential effects on work performance.
    • Captopril appears to have a more favorable impact on work-related outcomes compared to methyldopa and propranolol.
    • Consideration of work performance is important when selecting antihypertensive therapy.
